# How to Install Tin Ceiling Tiles

#### **Ceiling Components:**

A tin ceiling is comprised of two primary components and two optional components. The primary components are the tin ceiling panels and the crown molding. Optional components are flat molding/rope molding and filler. These components are generally used when the design layout requires it.

#### **Tools and Materials:**

**Tin panels:** Decorative Ceiling Tiles offers three panel types depending upon the type of installation:

- NailUp is used for traditional applications on a wood substrate, and for all backsplash, wall, and wainscoting projects (use adhesive instead of nails for these applications).
- Snap Lock is used for installation over dry-wall or popcorn ceilings.
- Drop-In panels are used with standard 2’ x 2’ sys-tems that have 15/16” grid widths.

#### **Snap Lock Ceiling Installation:**

**Preparing Your Ceiling for SNAP LOCK Installation:**

- Your starting point on the ceiling can be any corner of the room
- Measure the width of your tile and add a 1/2” to 3/4” to your measurement
- Mark the ceiling with the measurement from Step #2 in the corner of your room
- Repeat Steps #1 - #3 on an opposite corner but NOT a diagonal corner to your first measurement.
- Snap a chalk line from those two measuring points. This will provide the proper alignment for your panels.

**Installing Your SNAP LOCK Tiles:**

1. Attach the first ceiling panel in the corner with the male flanges facing the wall and a 1/2” gap from the wall. Use #6 x 1-1/4” drywall screws to secure it to the ceiling. This helps keep panels straight, even in uneven rooms. Align the first panel as squarely as possible. Starting with the male flange toward the wall ensures the female flange’s screw plate remains exposed as you install additional panels. For 24” pattern repeats, filler panels are usually required due to the panel’s deep embossing. Example: In an 11’ x 13’ room, install field panels in a centered 10’ x 12’ area, then add 12” filler panels around the perimeter. This creates a uniform look and allows the molding to sit flush, overlapping the filler panels.
2. After completing the first row, snap a chalk line at 24 1/8” for the second row. Insert the male flange of the new panel into the female flange of the installed panel, leaving no more than a 1/16” gap. A putty knife can help open the female flange if needed. Important: Do not force panels too tightly—this can cause gaps at the corners and misalign the pattern. Continue installing panels row by row until you reach the opposite wall and the end of the room.
3. For light fixtures, mark their placement on the back of the panel as you reach them. Measure from the panel edge, mark the fixture location, then drill a hole at the center. Use Offset Tin Snips to cut out the opening—either by cutting straight lines to the mark and trimming the perimeter, or by cutting in a spiral to form a circle. Once the opening is complete, install beauty rings around the light fixture for a clean, finished look.![tin-snap](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/tin-snap.jpg?width=250&height=168&name=tin-snap.jpg)
4. At the room perimeter, cut off the female flange on the partial panel. Shim the panel with a paint stick before attaching it to the ceiling—this prevents it from being pulled too tightly and creating a gap.
5. You are now ready to install the crown molding. Refer to the molding installation instructions on pages 8-9.

#### **NAIL-UP CEILING INSTALLATION:**

Required Substrate Material: 3/8” Plywood • 7/16” OSB Board • Furring strips on 12” centers

1. Determine the center point of the ceiling by snapping a chalk line diagonally from corner to corner of the ceiling. The “X” where the chalk lines intersect is the center of your ceiling.
2. Set your first ceiling tile with the edges square to wall in the center of the “X” of your![nailup-ceiling-hole](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/nailup-ceiling-hole.jpg?width=270&height=208&name=nailup-ceiling-hole.jpg) chalk line. Using an 18 gauge brad nail gun or Cone Head nails, nail your tile to the ceiling. Note: If hand-hammering the nails, you will want to use a small piece of wood with a 1/2” hole. This will prevent you from accidentally hammering your panels, which will dent if hit with your hammer.
3. Install the remainder of the field tiles by lining up the dimples on the panels. When possible, you want to have your overlapping seams facing away from your main entry point of the room. In most cases when installing a 24” pattern, filler panels will be needed because of the deep profile embossment of the panels. For example, if your room is 11’ x 13’, you would install your field panels in a 10’ x 12’ area in the center of the room and then install 12” of filler panels around the perimeter. This creates a uniform look and allows your molding to sit flush with the ceiling, as it is overlapping the filler panels.
4. In most installations, you will use filler panels and can use flat molding for a smooth transition between the field panels and the filler panels.
5. For light fixtures, mark their placement on the back of the panel as you reach them. Measure from the panel edge, mark the fixture location, then drill a hole at the center.![tin-snap](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/tin-snap.jpg?width=270&height=181&name=tin-snap.jpg) Use Offset Tin Snips to cut out the opening—either by cutting straight lines to the mark and trimming the perimeter, or by cutting in a spiral to form a circle. Once the opening is complete, install beauty rings around the light fixture for a clean, finished look.
6. If the field panels go wall to wall then you are ready to install the molding (refer to the Crown Molding and/or Flat Molding instructions).
7. Finally, caulk the joints in the ceiling tiles and the molding if necessary. You can also touch up any nail heads with touch up paint.

**TOOL/SUPPLIES REQUIRED:**

| - Tape measure - Straight edge (framing square or 4” level) - Chalk line - Drill | - Fine point Sharpie - Cone Head nails or 18 guage brad nail gun with brad nails - Offset Tin Snips | - Ladder or scaffolding - Hammer - 1/2” drill bit |

#### **ACOUSTIC NAIL-UP CEILING INSTALLATION**

Required Material: 2” x 4” wood studs or furring strips (for grid) • 2” Acoustical Pads

**Step 1: Planning and Measurement**

1. Measure the entire ceiling area and calculate how many 24” x 24” tin panels and Acoustical Pads are needed. Include +5% overage for tin panels.
2. Snap chalk lines diagonally from corner to corner. The center “X” is your ceiling center.
3. Plan for lighting/vents and determine which tiles need cutting.

**Step 2: Build the Wood Grid Substrate**

1. Construct a wood grid by installing 2″ x 4″ boards spaced 24″ apart (on center) in both directions, forming a series of 24″ x 24″ openings for the acoustical pads.![wood-grid](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/wood-grid.jpg?width=300&height=168&name=wood-grid.jpg)
2. Secure each board directly into the ceiling joists using screws long enough to go through drywall/ plaster and into solid wood.
3. Ensure that each opening is completely framed by wood so every tile edge has backing for nails.
4. Leave at least 1.25″ to 1.5″ of exposed wood around each opening to accommodate the panel’s nail flange. This accommodates the ¼” nail flange built into each tile and provides enough area for nailing without missing the wood. This spacing accounts for tool positioning and minor alignment shifts during installation.
5. Use a level to confirm the grid is flat and flush. Shim any low spots to maintain a consistent surface for tile installation.

**Step 3: Insert Acoustical Pads**

1. Unpack and inspect 2” thick Acoustical Pads
2. Insert one pad into each wood-framed cavity.![acoustic-pad](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/acoustic-pad.jpg?width=350&height=263&name=acoustic-pad.jpg)
3. Ensure pads fit snugly and sit flush with the back of the wood grid cavity, without bulging or compression. This placement allows the tin panel to be installed over the grid face, naturally leaving a small air gap between the pad and the back of the perforated tile. This gap is beneficial for acoustic performance and prevents sagging contact.
4. Use impaling clips to secure pads firmly against the back of the grid cavity, ensuring they stay recessed and do not press against the tin panel. Optionally, apply low-tack adhesive or double-sided tape at corners. For precise alignment or removability, consider light-duty Z-clip systems.

**Step 4: Install Acoustic Tin Panels**

1. Begin at the ceiling center “X” and work outward. ![nailup-ceiling-hole](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/nailup-ceiling-hole.jpg?width=366&height=282&name=nailup-ceiling-hole.jpg)
2. Align the first panel square to the ceiling, centered on the chalk lines
3. Place each 24” x 24” perforated tin panel over the pad cavity, nail using: Cone Head nails (hand-driven with hammer) or 18-gauge brad nails (pneumatic gun @ 25 PSI).
4. If using Cone Head nails, use a small block with a 1/2” hole to guide the nail and prevent hammer damage. If using an 18-gauge brad nailer (set to 25 PSI), this is not necessary as the tool provides controlled, non-impact fastening.
5. Fasten the tin panels at 6” intervals along the overlapped edges, using either Cone Head nails or brad nails.
6. Overlap seams per panel design for a tight, finished look. As you position each panel, line up the guide dimples at the edges to ensure precise alignment and consistent spacing.
7. After installing the first few tiles, shine a flashlight upward through the perforated surface. Check for consistent pad visibility and confirm that no pads are sagging, missing, or pressing against the back of the tile. Make any necessary adjustments before continuing with full ceiling coverage.
8. Continue field installation, following the dimple alignment and verifying pattern continuity as you progress outward.

**Step 5: Light Fixtures and Cutouts**

1. As you reach fixture locations, mark their placement on the back of the panel.
2. Drill a starter hole and use Offset Tin Snips to cut an opening: (a) Cut straight lines to edge and trim perimeter or (b) Spiral inward for round openings.
3. Install beauty rings or trim for a clean fixture finish.

**Step 6: Edge Trim & Filler Panels**

1. If the field panels do not reach the walls, you have two options:
Option A (filler method): Install filler tiles around the perimeter for a clean, uniform border that supports molding installation. These tiles are relatively flat and have low embossing depth, making them ideal for supporting molding and ensuring flush transitions.
Option B (cut-through method): Continue the field pattern to the perimeter and cut panels through the pattern to fit. This maintains design continuity but may cause molding to sit unevenly if cutting through deep embossing.
2. When using cut tin panels at the perimeter, you should also install an appropriately sized Acoustical Pad behind the panel to maintain acoustic consistency. Trim the pad with a utility knife to match the panel size.
3. Choose your edge treatment based on aesthetic preference and site conditions. Use flat or crown molding to frame the ceiling and conceal any perimeter cuts or fillers.
4. Refer to the molding installation guide for detailed instructions on cutting angles, nailing, and seam finishing.

**Step 7: Final Touches**

1. Caulk any seams or gaps where needed
2. Use touch-up paint on visible nail heads or scuffs.
3. Confirm all tiles are flush, secure, and visually aligned.
4. Double-check pad fitment and coverage behind all perforated tiles.

#### **DROP-IN CEILING INSTALLATION:**

 Required Substrate: 2’ x 4’ or 2’ x 2’ Ceiling Grid

*Note: If an existing grid has 2’ x 4’ openings, convert it to a 2’ x 2’ ceiling grid using our 2’ Cross Tee. To install the Cross Tee simply secure in the center of the 2’ x 4’ opening. Tin Ceilings tiles are 23 7/16” sq with a 1/16” step so the ceiling tile will sit flush from side to side.*

**After determining the grid sizing of your ceiling, follow the steps below to install your tin tiles:**

**![grid-sizing](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/grid-sizing.jpg?width=400&height=185&name=grid-sizing.jpg)**

1. Start in one corner of the room at a full 2’ x 2’ opening. In most situations, there will be openings around the perimeter of the grid that are less than a full 2’ x 2’. These smaller spaces will require cut tiles. Leave these spaces around the perimeter for the last step of your install.
2. Turn the ceiling panel at a slight angle, sliding it through the opening. At this point you can lay the ceiling tile into the grid opening, attaching hold down clips that keep your tile tile tight to the grid so that there’s no gapping between the grid and the panel.
3. Repeat step #2 going to the right or left. ![grid-size-open](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/grid-size-open.jpg?width=300&height=188&name=grid-size-open.jpg)
4. Place two hold down clips on the side where the two ceiling panels are installed on the same t-rail.
5. Finish installing the rest of the ceiling tiles with the hold down clips as you proceed. If you have opted to use our Acoustical Drop-In tiles, which can reduce noise by up to 85%, install the acoustical pads behind the panels as you progress.
6. If using a ceiling panel that has a deep embossment, such as Patterns #22 or #23, consider using a filler panel around the perimeter. This will prevent gapping along the edges. If you do not want to use a filler panel, cut the panel just shy of the grid, allowing the panel to completely drop down and not sit on the grid. Then attach crown molding using corner blocking/cribbing. This will hide your cut.

**TOOL/SUPPLIES REQUIRED:**

| - Tape measure - Straight edge (framing square or 4” level) - Aviation shears - Acoustical pads (optional) | - Fine point Sharpie - Hold down clips - Safety glasses | - Safety gloves - 1/2” drill bit - Drill |
| --- | --- | --- |

#### **PAINTING:**

| **Painting:** No water-based products can be used directly on the metal tiles or molding; however, you can use an oil-based primer. Once the tiles have been primed, you are able to use a paint of your choice. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore also offer DTM (direct-to-metal) paints. The DTM paints can be painted directly on the metal and will eliminate the need to use a primer. **Clear Coat:** No water-based paint can be used directly on the metal. The best choices are an oil-based polyurethane or a lacquer. | ![painting](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/painting.jpg?width=345&height=180&name=painting.jpg) |

#### **CUTTING TIN:**

| **Metal shears / Offset Tin Snips:** These tools can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or a local hardware store. **Guillotine paper cutters:** Heavy-duty tabletop paper cutters similar to those used in schools and office environments. Every job requires cutting of varying lengths. **RotoZip tool:** Great for can lights and applications that require circular cuts. | ![cutting-tin](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/cutting-tin.jpg?width=345&height=261&name=cutting-tin.jpg) ![cutting-tin-1](https://support.decorativeceilingtiles.net/hs-fs/hubfs/cutting-tin-1.jpg?width=345&height=290&name=cutting-tin-1.jpg) |

#### **FIXTURES & VENTS**

**Light fixtures, chandeliers, recessed lighting, vents, etc., can easily be accommodated by tin ceiling panels.**

1. Remove the fixture
2. Trace the fixture perimeter onto the tin panel
3. Cut out traced area with Offset Tin Snips
4. Install cut tin on ceiling
5. Re-install fixture over installed tin
